About Formus Labs
Formus Labs is an innovative orthopaedic software development company creating world-first solutions for joint replacement surgeries. Born out of the world-renowned Auckland Bioengineering Institute, we are the creators of the world's first cloud-based, AI-automated 3D pre-operative planning software for joint replacement. By fusing computational biomechanics and AI automation, our cutting-edge web applications (such as Formus Hip) empower orthopaedic surgeons to transition from traditional 2D X-rays to fully interactive, patient-specific 3D "digital twins" in under an hour.
Backed by global commercial strategic leaders and partnerships with top-tier medical device manufacturers like Zimmer Biomet, Formus Labs is rapidly scaling its revolutionary Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) across Australia, New Zealand, and international markets.
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly driven, clinically savvy Technical Sales Representative (Medical) to accelerate the commercial growth and clinical adoption of the Formus platform across Australia. This specialist field role bridges the gap between sophisticated biomechanical software and the high-stakes environment of the orthopaedic operating theatre.
In this role, you will be the primary technical sales face of Formus Labs. You will manage territory sales, cultivate deep clinical partnerships with orthopaedic surgeons, and educate medical device sales representatives on how to seamlessly integrate our automated 3D planning suites into their current surgical workflows.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Drive Commercial Adoption: Develop and execute strategic sales plans to expand Formus Labs' user base among orthopaedic surgeons and private/public hospital networks.
- Clinical Software Consultation: Act as an expert consultant to healthcare professionals, demonstrating the computational biomechanics, alignment targets, and sizing benefits of Formus Hip and future implant portfolios.
- Partner with Implant Sales Teams: Educate and support medical device company representatives (e.g., joint reconstruction specialists) to co-promote and pull-through the software alongside physical orthopaedic hardware.
- Surgical Workflow Integration: Conduct hands-on technical onboarding, ensuring clinics and hospital PACS networks can cleanly upload patient CT data and interactively modify automated plans.
- Feedback Coordination: Gather real-world user feedback from high-volume orthopaedic key opinion leaders (KOLs) and systematically channel technical recommendations to our internal engineering and product management teams.
- Scientific Representation: Represent Formus Labs at major orthopaedic conferences, scientific assemblies (such as AAHKS or the Australian Orthopaedic Association), and private hospital workshops.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Orthopaedic Surgery Experience: Minimum of 3 years’ experience within the orthopaedic joint reconstruction industry, with demonstrated knowledge of total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) workflows. Experience supporting orthopaedic surgical environments, medical device sales, or clinical engagement with operating theatre teams will be highly regarded. Previous exposure to orthopaedic clinical practice or healthcare settings, including roles such as Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, or Physician, is advantageous but not essential.
- Medical Device & Software Sales Track Record: Demonstrated success in either medical hardware sales (implants, patient-specific guides) or Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) commercialization. Experience with cloud-based medical software or digital surgery platforms is highly advantageous.
- Anatomical & Biomechanical Proficiency: Ability to converse fluidly with high-volume surgeons regarding skeletal anatomy, mechanical vs. anatomical alignment, implant orientation metrics (offset, anteversion, inclination), and medical imaging modalities (CT, PACS).
- Relationship Management: Proven ability to command respect and build long-term, trust-based partnerships with orthopaedic surgeons, hospital theatre staff, and strategic corporate device partners.
- Travel Flexibility: Willingness to travel routinely across the designated territory to provide clinical support in theatres and consultative sales meetings.
- Masters degree or Higher will be highly regarded.
