We are currently seeking a skilled Software and Applications Programmer to join our ICT team and drive innovation across our digital systems.
The Role
As a Software and Applications Programmer, you will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and enhancing software applications that support student management, learning platforms, and internal business processes. Working closely with academic and administrative staff, you will ensure our systems are secure, efficient, and aligned with industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Research, consult, analyse, and evaluate system program needs across student administration, learning management, and institutional reporting to ensure alignment with operational goals.
- Identify technology limitations and deficiencies in existing systems and associated processes, procedures, and methods, proposing practical improvements.
- Test, debug, diagnose, and correct errors and faults in applications using established programming languages, following internal testing protocols, guidelines, and quality standards to ensure programs perform to specification.
- Write and maintain program code to meet system requirements, system designs, and technical specifications in accordance with Pakenham Institute’s quality accredited standards.
- Write, update, and maintain technical program documentation, end-user guides, and operational procedures for institute-wide applications.
- Provide advice, guidance, and expertise in developing proposals and strategies for software design activities, including financial evaluation and costings for recommending software purchases and upgrades.
Selection Criteria (Essential)
- Proven experience in software development and applications programming (e.g., Java, C#, Python, PHP, or similar).
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess system needs and technical limitations.
- Experience with debugging, testing, and quality assurance in software development.
- Ability to write clean, maintainable code and technical documentation.
- Knowledge of financial evaluation and cost-benefit analysis for software procurement.
- Excellent communication skills to liaise with non-technical staff and stakeholders.
- Relevant qualification in Information Technology, Software Development, or equivalent experience.
Desirable
- Experience in the education or vocational training sector.
- Familiarity with student management systems (e.g., VETtrak, Moodle, or similar).
- Understanding of data protection and privacy regulations.
